To my conservative friends, you can't believe in American Exceptionalism and believe Obama doesn't deserve the Nobel Peace Prize. Your whacky doctrine compels you to believe that Obama of course should win the Nobel Peace Prize.
I on the other hand, free from such a contrivance, can state the obvious that Obama has not yet done something on par to deserve such an award.
But my pragmatic sense concludes that this award is good for him and in general good for his policies and probably good for the country as a whole.
What do you think the conservative doctrine is? Why would it compel a conservative to believe he receive the Nobel Peace Prize? Do you think non-conservatives can also believe in American Exceptionalism?
I'm not sure in what sense you think the award is good for him. However, it does seem bad for the committee since it further undermines the legitimacy of the award.
American Exceptionalism as i understand it is the belief that everything the United States does is great because it is done by Americans or by America in general. Therefore, of course Obama won the Peace Prize. Which other American could they have given it to?
I don't think the Nobel Peace Prize could ever actually be de-legitimatized. Maybe if they gave it to a dictator or something like that. But the Nobel Prize is like the NY Times. Disagreeing with it tends to say more about the one disagreeing than the entity that is being disagreed to (against?)
